Wisdom Village
A papakāinga built with our kaumātua for their oranga Te Whare Tapa Whā.
Wisdom Village is a kaumātua housing community being developed on the whenua of Ngā Pekanga in Whaitara. Grounded in our long tradition of service and whanaungatanga, it honours the generations who have carried us.
As stage one begins, the village will offer warm, safe, culturally grounded homes where kaumātua can live independently while staying connected to each other, the Mission, and their whānau.
Wisdom Village will offer:
-
Purpose-built kaumātua homes
-
A multi-purpose community centre
-
Warm, healthy, and affordable living environments
-
A community shaped by manaakitanga and dignity
The Development
The staged development of Wisdom Village starts with the construction of the first five kaumātua units, which began with te Kauhuri Oneone, the Turning of the Soil on the 20th April, 2026.
When complete, the village will include:
-
24 homes — a mix of one- and two-bedroom units
-
A multi-purpose community centre for gatherings, health and wellbeing services, and whānau connection
-
Landscaped communal spaces that reflect the environment and history of Ngā Pekanga
Designed by architect Murali Bhaskar (Boon), the $16 million project represents a significant investment into kaumātua wellbeing and Māori-led community development.
Support from funders such as Taranaki Electricity Trust, and the Toi Foundation has helped bring this kaupapa to life, aligning with their commitment to safe, healthy, affordable housing and Māori-led solutions.
